Many tooth problems involve infections that spread to the pulp of the tooth, which is the inner portion where nerves, blood vessels, and root canalstissues are. When the infection worsens, it gets to the roots, which causes the patient pain. Our root canal specialists in Holland, MI, such as Dr. Todd Brower at Ottawa Smiles Dental can examine your teeth and determine whether or not you require root canal treatment.

About Root Canals

When the inner tooth becomes diseased, it brings a variety of issues to the patient including pain and sensitivity. A spreading infection can even cause pus pockets to develop, leading to an abscess. If not dealt with as soon as possible, you may find yourself in the world of problems with much more severe issues, which is the reason why the root canal treatment is a great procedure that can successfully remove diseased tissue and stop the spreading of infection. This also helps restore the tooth to good health again. It is designed to save a tooth with issues, hoping to prevent extraction.

With root canal treatment, the infected tissue is removed and the the area is properly disinfected. The canals themselves are also reshaped during this procedure. The chamber and canals are filled with material and medication to prevent infection. Most patients who have root canal treatment from our root canal specialists in Holland such as Dr. Brower at Ottawa Smiles Dental experience little or no pain or discomfort.

We specialize in restoring teeth that can last just as long as the healthy, natural ones in the mouth. The key to this is regular dental examinations as cleanings that detect issues early on. Preventative care is the best approach to oral health for patients of all ages. Getting a healthy smile doesn’t have to be difficult. We are here to help.

If seeing our Holland, MI, dentist, Dr. Todd Brower, isn’t a normal part of your preventive health routine, it should be. Routine cleanings dental proceduresand exams are one of the best ways to prevent dental issues from arising and catching issues soon when they are easier to treat. Of course, here at Ottawa Smiles Dental, we offer an array of different services to meet your needs. Here are only some of the great treatments we provide:

Root Canal Therapy

If you have a damaged or infected tooth that is causing you serious pain then chances are good that you’ll need a root canal. Decay, trauma or infection that reaches the dental pulp will most likely require this endodontic procedure. During this treatment, our Holland general dentist will go inside the tooth to remove the pulp and also clean out the tooth. The purpose of a root canal is to preserve your natural tooth and to prevent an extraction.

Dental Implants

If you have one or more missing teeth and you are looking for a restoration that is as close to a natural tooth as possible, it’s time you talked to us about dental implants. These little metal posts function like tooth roots and naturally fuse together with the jawbone to support a dental crown or other restoration, depending on how many teeth you need to replace. Dental implants do require surgery and can take up to one year or more to complete, but they are designed to last a lifetime.

Dentures

While dental implants can be a great way to replace missing teeth, it isn’t always the ideal option for everyone. If you are looking for a fast and inexpensive way to replace all or some of your teeth, it might be time to weigh the pros and cons of dentures. Dentures have certainly come a long way over the centuries. They are made from more advanced materials so that you get a dental prosthetic that looks as close to natural teeth and gums as possible. While dentures do need to be replaced every few years, they offer a more reasonable price tag that is pleasing to our patients.

Dental Crowns and Bridges

If you have a tooth that has experienced significant decay, infection or injury, in many cases a dental crown will be placed over the tooth to restore function. Of course, a dental crown may also be used to hide cosmetic flaws like a misshapen or discolored tooth. Crowns may also be used to support a dental bridge, which is a dental restoration that is also designed to replace one or more missing permanent teeth in a row.

Root CanalsPrevent decay or infection from causing tooth loss by getting a root canal.

Are you experiencing dental pain? If so, this could be an indication that you are suffering from an infection or severe decay. Your Holland dentist Dr. Todd Brower will fill the tooth in minor cases, but when there is extensive damage, we will need to perform a root canal in Holland, MI.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is an endodontic procedure in which your Holland dentist will remove the pulp, or inner structure of the tooth. The pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels and tissue, is the “feeling” area of the tooth. When the pulp becomes infected or damaged due to decay, infection or trauma, it will need to be removed.

When might my Holland dentist recommend a root canal?

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity or dental pain, then you’ll want to come in right away for a proper diagnosis. Dental pain comes in all different forms, but those who experience severe or constant pain may be dealing with decay or an infection that has reached the inside of the tooth, or the pulp. When this happens, the only way to treat the problem is with a root canal. A root canal is the best course of action for preserving a significantly damaged tooth and for preventing the tooth from requiring an extraction.

What does getting a root canal entail?

While you may have heard stories about root canals being painful, this is simply not true. Your Holland dentist will apply a local anesthesia prior to your procedure so you don’t experience discomfort. The main purpose of the procedure is to eliminate the pain you are already experiencing, not cause more. Getting a root canal is really no more involved than getting a cavity filled.

Once the anesthesia has taken effect, we will drill through the hard enamel of the tooth until we reach the pulp. Then we will carefully remove the diseased tissue and disinfect the inside of the tooth. After the tooth has been thoroughly cleaned, we will begin to rebuild it from the inside out using a special material. We will also decide whether a dental crown will be required to help strengthen the tooth.

Don’t let tooth pain get the better of your smile. Protect one of your most important features by seeing your Holland dentist right away. Call Ottawa Smiles Dental today!
